Visiting New England

The university town of Armidale in the New England region is located half way between Brisbane and Sydney on the  New England Highway, about an hour north of Tamworth. Armidale is also accessible by air with regular flights connecting the Armidale Regional Airport to Sydney and Brisbane and by train from Sydney.

Armidale is home to the first regional university in Australia, the prestigious University of New England which was founded in 1938 and is now home to a growing ‘Ag-tech’ sector as well as a number of educational facilities, organisations and schools. During you visit make sure to have a look at Booloombinah historic house at the heart of the university as well as the selection of specialist museums on campus.

Armidale was the first  regional community in Australia to be connected with the NBN with fibre to the premises and  was listed as one of the world’s 21 Smart Communities of 2016 by the Global Intelligent Community Forum.

Near NERAM is also the University’s C.B. Newling Building (otherwise known as the ‘Old Armidale Teacher’s College‘) which was the original home of NERAM’s Howard Hinton Collection and is now home to the New England Conservatorium of Music, the building’s foyer with a selection of artworks on display is often open and the verandahs have one of the best views of Armidale.

Accommodation in Armidale includes bed and breakfast, farmstays, hotels and motels. A range of hotel and motel options near the New England Regional Art Museum can be found online and we recommend staying at nearby Lindsay House, Armidale Boutique Accommodation or the All Seasons Motel within easy walking distance from NERAM.
